Over the last 15 years, rapid growth has been experienced by Owasso, proven by the number of residents which was almost 34,000 according to the 2014 Census. Located just north of Tulsa, this is more than just a small town, it is a metropolitan area that has the amenities and conveniences of a big city.
“Owasso” comes from an Osage Indian word that means “the end of the trail.” It was identified by where the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad line came to an end. The railroad depot was the first building for Owasso, settling here in Indian Territory in 1881 just before Oklahoma became a state in 1904. It wasn’t until 1972 that Owasso became chartered and officially considered a city.
It was after World War II when the population began to boom as veterans came here and would develop the aircraft industry that has made Owasso a name. Starting with the Tulsa Airport, then other industries related to the aircraft industry began to pop up between 1950 and 1970.
Today, the city is well respected and when it comes to being a family friendly community, it is recognized to have unlimited character. There is convenience of all kinds with churches, recreation, restaurants, and shopping aplenty. The schools are top rated, making it an ideal small city to raise a family.
